This
was our very first production as Shy the Sun. The commissioning agency
was looking for a new and experimental approach to their 5 television
commercials, and The Tale Of How made an impression on them. The brief
was simple: we were to create a sea creature serenade for a passing
United Airways airplane. The style had to be similar to The Tale Of How,
and other that that Shy the Sun received complete creative freedom; we
added a great deal of detail to create an aesthetic of overabundance and
surplus, using a team of 5 people in total. Almost everything, except
the characters, were hand drawn on paper and then composited together to
create a shot of about 300 layers each. Have a look at our making of
for a breakdown of our process.
Ps. As we have two pescatarians at
Shy the Sun, we ended up eating sardines for almost every meal… after 3
months of doing so and staring at sea creatures on screen, we’re all
struggling to eat sardines ever since. Yes, and that is Robert Redford’s
voice at the end. And did you notice that the island sits on the back
of a giant turtle?
